Across cultures and continents, Christmas is marked by one common practice: the giving of gifts. People prepare months ahead in shopping, wrapping gifts, and planning so that loved ones can feel remembered and valued As a result of this, in many nations, Christmas is the single most economically active season of the year.
In 2017, New Zealand took this spirit of giving to an extraordinary level. The nation launched a countrywide Christmas gift exchange, inviting citizens from all walks of life to participate. Thousands signed up including public leaders, so that no one would be left out of the joy of receiving a gift. It was a powerful picture of generosity on a national scale, reminding people that Christmas is meant to be shared.
Yet, as beautiful as these traditions are, they point to something far deeper. The excitement, the shopping, and the exchanges all echo a greater reality. Long before the world learned to give gifts at Christmas, God Himself initiated the greatest gift exchange in history.
At the very heart of Christmas is not what we give one another, but what God gave to us. He gave what we could never earn. He did not send gold, silver, or comfort—He gave His Son. Wrapped not in royalty but in humility, Jesus came as God’s eternal love gift, offered freely to a world that did not deserve it, yet desperately needed it.
John 3:16 reveals the true meaning of Christmas: God so loved… that He gave. Love was the motive. Giving was the action. Salvation was the outcome. Christmas is not merely a season of generosity, it is the revelation of God’s heart toward humanity.
While the world celebrates temporary delights, Scripture calls us to behold God’s eternal gift in the person of Christ. In exchange for our sin, shame, and separation, God offered forgiveness, reconciliation, and a future filled with hope. This is love beyond measure; love that rescues, restores, and redeems.
This season invites us to pause and praise God for His many mercies. As we gather with family and friends, let gratitude continually rise in our hearts. Let us share kindness, love and generosity. But above all, let us share the Good News of Christ coming to save the world, appreciating God for loving us so much that He sent us the best and greatest gift of all—His Son.
