Rodney Smith never attended a school at any time in his life, yet God used him to influence the lives of millions of people worldwide.
On November 17, 1876, Rodney got converted at sixteen years old and vowed he would live for God and serve Him faithfully.
Though uneducated, he got a Bible, English dictionary and Bible dictionary and carried them everywhere causing people to laugh.
Convinced that God had called him to preach, he taught himself to read and write and began to practice preaching. Sometimes he would go into a turnip field and preach to the turnips. He would sing hymns to the people he met and was known as the singing gipsy boy.
One day while attending a convention in London, founder of the Salvation Army, William Booth noticed the young singing boy and perceived he had a promising future. He then asked Rodney to join his ministry..On June 25, 1877, Rodney accepted the invitation of William Booth to be an evangelist with the Salvation army. For six years, Rodney served with them preaching on street corners and in mission halls.
Within nine months, the crowd that gathered to hear Rodney grew from 13 people to 250.
His meetings grew rapidly to 1,500 in attendance and to converts of around 1,000.
Before leaving the Salvation army, Rodney’s preaching assignments had produced 23,000 decisions for Christ.
As he struck out on his own ministry, Rodney became an itinerant evangelist and worked with a variety of organizations all over the world. He often held meetings where the crowds usually overflowed the halls and auditoriums. It is said that he never had a meeting without conversions. He conducted evangelistic campaigns for over 70 years and became a household name in many parts of the world and influenced the lives of millions for Christ.

When Rodney was faithful in serving under General William Booth, God gave him his own ministry.
