On Thursday, October 8th 2020, the University of Southern Mississippi Foundation honored the life and legacy of Oseola McCarty.
The celebration featured presentations from many prominent people and the unveiling of a new bronze sculpture of Oseola McCarty at the University.
What is interesting about this celebration is that Oseola McCarty was a poor black washerwoman who was a school dropout. But her life of service to God and humanity distinguished her and brought her to international prominence.
Oseola McCarty was born into poverty in 1908. By age eight, she started doing laundry and ironing people’s clothes to earn money to help her family. When her aunt became very sick, Oseola had to drop out of school in 6th grade to take care of her. She never returned to school.
Thereafter, she dedicated her life to helping others, working hard and serving God. She received salvation at an early age and was baptized by age 13.
She would start each day on her knees in prayers to God and then she would go out to work as hard as she could and save as much money as she could. Over the years, from saving her pennies, she accumulated money in the bank. When she retired in 1995, at age 87, her life savings had amounted up to $280,000. McCarty then astounded many people by donating $150,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi to fund scholarships to help needy students obtain the education she never had.
When what she did became public, over 600 people made donations that tripled her original endowment. When the owner of CNN, Ted Turner heard her story he donated a billion dollars and told the New York Times, “If that little woman can give away everything she has, then I can give a billion.”
McCarty gave sacrificially without expecting any reward, but God turned everything around for her. Her selfless donation sparked worldwide attention. From being an unknown poor washerwoman, overnight she became an international sensation. She was honored around the world by the United Nations, the American President, the American Congress, and other international organizations. Though a school dropout, Harvard University awarded her an honorary doctorate. She died in 1999 and today, her legacy of service lives on through full-tuition Oseola McCarty scholarships that are presented annually to several students.
It is truly amazing how God totally changed Oseola’s story. Though she was born into obscurity and mediocrity, her service to God and humanity eventually lifted her into international prominence.
Though the odds initially seemed stacked against her early in life, yet the touch of God’s divine favor catapulted her to amazing new heights.
So shall it be for us in this new month of August.
Today marks the first day of August. The word ‘August’ is used to refer to someone having great importance and of the highest social class, marked by majestic dignity or grandeur.
It also means “consecrated” or “venerable’.
Certainly, August is a unique month, foreordained as special, highly esteemed and glorious.
In this 8th month God will lift us up to new heights as we dedicate ourselves to serve Him and be a blessing to people around us,
As we serve God with renewed passion, He will soon lift us to unimaginable new heights.
At the Cross, Jesus paid the price for us to have a victorious destiny. For our sakes, He emptied Himself at Calvary, and took upon Him the curse that the blessings of Abraham might come upon us.
Philippians 2:9 [AMPC] says that because He stooped so low God has highly exalted Him and has freely bestowed on Him the name that is above every name.
Today, by the Blood of Jesus, let us receive the grace to live a life dedicated to serving God and blessing humanity. However, our diligent pursuit of God in the secret place of prayer is what reflects in our dedication and service to His kingdom. Our spiritual life is the engine room that generates the light that shines from our lives to the world. It is when we have been first watered in God’s Presence that we can water others also. Let us therefore in this new month make a fresh commitment to seek God with renewed zeal. As we do, it will certainly be our season to enjoy divine lifting, breakthroughs, open doors and greater new heights in all our endeavors.
PRAYER: Lord, Please help me to be faithful in serving You where I am right now, so that I can experience the blessings of greatness You have ordained for me in this unique new month in Jesus Name. .. ..
