Rebecca Protten’s life began in chains. Born into slavery in the 1700s, her early years were marked by limitation and hardship. Yet freedom came while she was still young, and soon after, she encountered Christ through Moravian missionaries. That encounter reshaped her future.
Rather than dwell on the pain of her past, Rebecca devoted herself to sharing the Gospel among fellow slaves. Her bold preaching stirred hope and dignity among oppressed people. Because her message empowered others spiritually, the authorities viewed her as a threat and imprisoned her. Even after her release, the opposition did not cease. Some resented her freedom, and others criticized her influence.
Rebecca refused to fight every critic. She chose instead to stay close to God and remain focused on her calling. She pressed forward, continuing her mission despite resistance. Over time, her faithfulness contributed to the rise of African Protestant Christianity in the Atlantic world. She later became known as the “Mother of the Black Reformation.”
Progress in life requires focus. Through divine guidance we know how to choose our battles. Not every attack requires our response, and not every opposition deserves our energy.
Paul writes, “Forgetting those things which are behind… I press toward the mark.”
Our focus is to press forward and refuse distractions. When our eyes are fixed on Jesus, He fights for us. He silences critics, clears obstacles, and opens doors no one can shut.
Today marks the end of February. What a testimony that God has carried us through another month. Let us thank Him for His protection, provision, and faithfulness thus far. Whatever tried to hinder us did not prevail. Whatever storm arose did not consume us.
As we step into March, let us move forward with gratitude and expectation. Let us forget the setbacks and disappointments and press forward toward our high calling in Christ. As we continue to make Jesus our obsession, He will fight every battle that stands between us and our destiny and give us resounding victory.
PRAYER:
Lord, thank You for bringing me safely to the end of February. I release every distraction and disappointment into Your hands. As I draw closer to You, I thank You for fighting my battles and leading me forward into greater victories in the month of March, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
