1 Corinthians 15:58 ‘Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.’
DAILY READING – Galatians 5:16-26; Ezekiel 1; Psalm 148
Hattie May Wiatt was a child who became well-known for her inspiring act of charity that had far reaching effects.
In 1884, six-year-old Hattie May Wiatt weekly attended Grace Baptist Church in Philadelphia with her parents. But she often found the Sunday school very over crowded. One day she heard the pastor say that the Church lacked the funds to construct a bigger building.
This little girl went home and began to save her pennies to give for the construction of a bigger place.
Unfortunately, due to ill health, two years later, in 1886, Hattie May died. After the funeral Hattie’s mother gave the pastor a little bag they had found under their daughter’s pillow containing 57 cents in change that she had saved up. Alongside it was a note in her handwriting: ‘To help build bigger so that more children can go to Sunday school.’
The pastor was greatly touched by the little girl’s gesture. He then changed all the money into pennies and offered each one for sale. He received $250 – and 54 of the cents were given back. The $250 was itself changed into pennies and sold by the newly formed ‘Wiatt Mite Society’. In this way, her 57 cents kept on multiplying.
Twenty-six years later, as a result of Hattie May Wiatt’s 57-cent donation, a church was built that could contain over 5,600 people, a large hospital was built, it established a scholarship catering to 80,000 students and supported about 2,000 missionaries on the field.
David proved his affection for God by giving massively towards the construction of God’s temple.
According to modern day calculations, David gave roughly $20 billion to the construction of a temple that he would not even live to see.
When we truly love God, our hearts will pant towards the welfare of His kingdom.
The kingdom mandate requires us to faithfully love and serve God with all our heart. But we cannot truly love God without desiring to see His work progress on the earth.
God proved His love for us by giving His only begotten son for our redemption. And the depth of our love for God is proved by how much we are willing to lay down for the cause of the Gospel.
Not all of us can stand and preach in a church or go to a mission field, but all of us can play a vital role in God’s work by using our resources for His Kingdom.
Many people in the world today are suffering all manner of spiritual bondage simply because they lack access to the light of the Gospel.
When we give towards sending the Gospel all over the world, then in practical terms, we are helping to save the lost. Kingdom wealth is not an achievement, rather it is an entrustment from God to those who will promote His work on earth.
In the end what matters most is not the riches we were able to amass during our life time, but how much of it was used to serve God and impact the lives of men.
Whatever service we render towards the spread of the Gospel is never in vain. This is why 1 Corinthians 15:58 encourages us to be ‘stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.’
Surely, God is a rewarder and when we seek first the advancement of His kingdom, then He ensures all other things are added unto us.
PRAYER: Lord, I thank You for granting me the grace to accept the spiritual responsibility of investing towards the expansion of Your kingdom. As I do, I thank You Lord, for Your multiplied blessings upon my life in Jesus Name.
