Alexander Maclaren was a great and prominent preacher in England during the time of other notable preachers, such as C. H. Spurgeon, Joseph Parker, and F. B. Meyer.
Alexander Maclaren stood out among them and was known as “the prince of expository preachers.” He often drew large crowds due to his powerful sermons and was twice elected president of the Baptist Union.
The secret of his success is embedded in his habit of preparation.
Every morning when Alexander Maclaren entered the study in his home at 9am to start his sermon preparation, he would kick off his slippers and put on heavy outdoor work boots as a reminder to himself of the hard work he was about to do. He understood that great spiritual labour and preparation was required to succeed in the ministry God has called.
Before his rise to prominence, the first twelve years of his ministry were spent in obscurity. But in those years of obscurity he embarked on immense and valuable preparation for the great ministry that would follow.
In that quiet, obscure little place he spent a lot of time with his Bible. Rising at dawn, he would study for nine or ten hours per day. He spent time patiently meditating on each passage of Scripture while communing with God.
The fuel gathered in his hours of Bible study, ignited a deep prayer life and fellowship with the Holy Spirit. This resulted in his powerful delivery of God’s Word and a highly impactful ministry.

The deeper our roots in God, the greater the heights we can attain in life. Serving our way to greatness means investment in seasons of preparation where we develop spiritual depth and strength for where God is taking us to. Such adequate preparation enables us to overcome the obstacles and challenges that often resist great destinies..
Truly, preparation is the mother of manifestation. God requires us to submit to the process of proper preparation before He presents us to our world.
