Frederick Douglass was a slave who, against all odds, rose to become a leading voice for freedom in the 19th century. At a time when it was illegal for black slaves to be educated, young Douglass secretly taught himself to read and write by observing white children and studying discarded books.
Later, he began sharing Scriptures in black churches, teaching fellow slaves from the Bible. When his secret learning was discovered by his white masters, he suffered harsh punishment at their hands. Yet the love of God preserved Frederick through those dark moments. On September 3, 1838, Douglass escaped slavery and made his way to New York to start a new life of freedom. Douglass began serving as a licensed preacher in the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Through the years, he became a passionate abolitionist and a voice for freedom for black American slaves. He traveled widely, delivering powerful speeches that drew thousands. Frederick became well known, wrote five autobiographies that shaped history, and rose to become the first black man to hold high office in America. He even served as adviser to five U.S. presidents.
The love of God actively works to change our story and helps us conquer impossible circumstances. Romans 8:37 declares, “In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” When God is for you, no situation can be against you. When God is your helper, negative life circumstances cannot truncate your destiny. Though you may be initially oppressed and maltreated, nothing and no one can stop your eventual rise to the top.
Psalm 9:9 says, “The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble.” As long as you are sincerely seeking God, you become a recipient of His love and divine help. While there may be initial difficulties and challenges, as you remain persistent in seeking God and obeying His Word, it is only a matter of time before you emerge a winner. Limitations of education, poverty, race, or family background can never be a hindrance to your success.
The world may try to label you as rejected, forgotten, or unworthy, but through Christ you can do all things. It was the love of God that brought Joseph from the dungeon to the palace and Esther from obscurity to royalty. That same love is at work in you.As you walk in obedience to God’s Word today, certainly, His love will distinguish you and make you more than a conqueror over life’s challenges.
PRAYER: Lord, thank You for Your unfailing love that lifts and distinguishes me. Help me to walk daily in the consciousness of Your love and let my story be a testimony of Your glory, in Jesus’ Name.
