For decades, doctors have known of pills that have virtually no side effects, hardly costs anything to produce, yet cures or improves a wide range of illnesses for large numbers of people. These seemingly miraculous medications are known as ‘placebo treatment’. They are actually fake or dummy medicines designed to deceive patients into believing they are receiving a genuine remedy. The patient’s faith in the medicine then stimulates their brain into releasing healing chemicals into the body.
The placebo effect was discovered by an American medic, named Henry Beecher. While treating wounded soldiers during World War II, Henry Beecher ran out of pain-killing morphine. Desperate, he began infusing the soldiers with a saline solution, while telling them that he was giving them morphine. Amazingly, 40 percent of the soldiers reacted as if they had actually received morphine to ease their pain.
On another occasion, Dr. Henry needed to perform surgery on a badly wounded soldier and injected him with saline solution, while pretending to be injecting him with morphine. The soldier calmed down and Beecher went ahead with the operation without anesthesia.
When he returned to the U.S after the war, Dr. Henry Beecher began to study this phenomenon of placebo effect which ultimately made him one of the most influential people in modern medical research.
The placebo effect has mystified doctors for years. Numerous studies have shown that these fake pills, dummy therapies, and even fake surgery, work as well as the genuine remedy for many illnesses. A landmark report in the US in 1955 found that one in three people will recover from a range of conditions simply through taking placebos.
The placebo effect is simply an example of the brain convincing the body that a fake treatment is the real thing and thus stimulating healing.
New research indicates that placebos can even cause real biological changes in the body, a finding that is transforming how medicine is practiced.
Most scientists believe that the placebo response is an act of faith. Patients unknowingly given fake medicines get better because they believed in their minds that they were taking genuine medicines.
The placebo effect is proof positive of what is captured in Scripture. Proverbs 23:7a says, “For as he thinks within himself, so is he.”

The mind can be likened to the control room of life because it co-ordinates and controls the activities of a man. Our lives are determined more by our thoughts than by our circumstances.
The secrets of a man’s success are a result of the state of his mind and what he thinks most about.
We live in a world of influences. The things you read, watch and listen to, will eventually control your thoughts and determine what you believe and what you experience in life.
Indeed our thought to a large extent determine what becomes of us. Life is a reflection and summation of all our dominant thoughts. You can never go higher than your thoughts. Certainly as a man thinks in his heart, so is he.
The fruits our lives produce are the manifestation of what has been going on in our minds. The harvest of our tomorrow depends on the seed we are sowing today into our hearts.
The truth is that, until you change the way you think, you cannot change the way you live. Our lives will eventually move in the direction of our most dominant thoughts.
It therefore becomes critical how our minds are informed, because this can either reform us or deform us; it can either assist or resist the fulfillment of our destiny.
This is why the Bible tells us to guard our mind with all diligence. We need to properly manage what goes in and out of our minds, to avoid derailment of God’s plan for our lives.
One sure way to guard our minds is through constant study and meditation on Scriptures.

Today, as we draw the curtain on the month of November, let us also deliberately draw the curtain on every form of wrong thinking. Let us receive the grace, to daily align our thoughts with God’s Word, so that faith can dominate our minds to believe and receive our desired miracles, signs and wonders.

PRAYER: Lord, Please grant me the grace to fill my heart constantly with Your Word. May I have a renewed desire and appetite to constantly sow Your Word into my heart so that I can reap a harvest of signs and wonders in Jesus Name. .
