In 2005, America faced one of its worst natural disasters as Hurricane Katrina brought floods and gale-force winds that devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. The hurricane displaced more than a million people and destroyed many buildings. A surprising survivor of the hurricane was New Orleans’ live oaks. These remarkable trees remained resilient and withstood the fierce winds of the hurricane.

Generally oaks are known to withstand incredibly strong storms, like tornadoes and hurricanes. Even when they are stripped of their leaves, oak trees survive because of their strength, their curvy branches, and their incredible root systems. Oaks not only withstand the storm, they also help protect the frail plants which cling to their trunks.

One of such frail plants is the Vine which ordinarily cannot survive the strong force of hurricanes but when sheltered by a strong oak, these plants remain unscathed. During a storm, the wind that blows on the exposed side of the vine, instead of yanking it away, only presses it closer to the oak’s trunk, where it abides protected until the calamity is over.

When the storms of life come, our only option is to cling to God with everything in us. Just as that frail vine clings to the strong oak, we must run to God and cling to Him to survive the storms of life. In our relationship with God, as long as we always cling tightly to Him, we will be protected from the fierce winds of life. As Christians we will sometimes face challenges. But thanks be to God who causes us to triumph always in Christ.

Times of challenges are when we should draw closer to God so that we can experience victory through Christ. In the seemingly turbulent seasons, when the wind is blowing fiercest, that is when to run deeper into the arms of Jesus. His grace is sufficient to guard us and cause us to prevail at last.

Afflictions are designed not to break us but to bend us toward our loving God. Therefore refuse to be broken by the wind of trials, rather let it bend you more towards the only One who can ultimately help you. Let it drive you to spending more time with God in prayers, study of the Word and worship. Psalm 34:18  says “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those who are crushed in spirit.”

In times of trials, God wants to keep us as the apple of His eyes and hide us under the shadow of His wings. As you keep clinging to Him, soon that test will turn to your testimony and every problem will end in praise.

PRAYER: Lord, please help me to cling to You at all times. Without You I can do nothing, my hope and trust is in You, and I know Your grace is able to sustain me and lift me to glorious new heights in Jesus Name.
