When war came to Korea during his teenage years, things were so bad that David Yongi Cho’s family suffered terribly. Cho managed to eat just one small meal a day. By 1953, the malnutrition led to an enlarged heart, and tuberculosis invaded his lungs.
At only 17 years of age, he was sent home to die. Cho’s father prayed to Buddha, but nothing happened.
As Cho waited for death in a small shack, a young woman came to tell him about Jesus.
She ignored his attempts to scare her away until he eventually caved in. In his weakened state, Cho walked to an American mission and responded to the call to accept Christ.
His family renounced him as an “unholy Christian dog,” but an American missionary, Louis Richards, took him into his home and encouraged him to look to Jesus for healing. One night in prayer, Cho had a vision of the glory of Christ that overwhelmed him and he began to speak in tongues. From then on, he began to recover until the doctor soon noted that the tuberculosis was gone and his heart had returned to its normal size. Cho later trained to become a pastor and founded the Yoido Full Gospel Church. From a small tent in an impoverished neighborhood outside Seoul, the Church grew exponentially to become the world’s largest congregation.
