Mark 14:38 ‘Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.
DAILY READING; Acts 27:13-44; 1 Samuel 3; Psalm 51
Paul Jensen was a successful businessman with a lucrative career, a beautiful wife, healthy kids, and an exceptionally strong body and mind. From all outward appearances he had it made… or so he thought. Though Paul professed faith in Christ at a young age, as an adult he had become complacent and filled his life with work, sports, cars, travel, and alcohol.
He even stopped attending church, prompting his wife, sister and mother to begin to earnestly pray for him.
Soon something happened that made Paul to realize that he had been chasing an empty, shallow life without God.
In April of 2002, Paul’s extended family met together in Palm Springs for vacation. Paul, his wife, his sister, her husband and their children went to
Joshua Tree park California. It was a place of mountains,
boulders, sands and scrub trees.
As they hiked, Paul’s sister, Karen suddenly had a deep premonition of evil and fear.
Few minutes later, Paul missed his step and fell seventy-five feet down a steep mountain and landed headfirst on the rock below. Karen, who first got to him thought he was dead, because his body was badly twisted and distorted but she was amazed to realize he was still breathing. Karen then began calling upon the Name of Jesus, over and over again.
After paramedics came and Paul was airlifted to the hospital, a miracle happened.
Though he had fallen from a height that was the equivalent of a four story building, doctors found he had no broken bones, no fractures, no internal bleeding. The CT scan indicated that his brain hadn’t even registered trauma.
After only 4 ½ hours in the hospital, he was released and went home. It was incredible!
His miraculous recovery really shook up Paul. He then realized that his pursuit of the good life without God at the center was an illusion. Thereafter he made God the focus of his life and dedicated himself to promoting the kingdom of God.
His story is contained in his book ‘Over the edge; into truth.’
There is no doubt Paul was preserved by the prayer of his family. At that crucial time of his fall, his buoyant bank account, successful business, luxury cars and friends in high places could not save him.
Only the power of God delivered him from certain death.
Truly we need to get our priorities right. Spending more time in pursuit of worldly things and less time in pursuit of God is a huge risk.
Life is handled with prayers. Just like a driver who has no spare tyre drives carefully, we must live soberly because we have no spare life.
In a world full of snares and temptations, we must be vigilant , because there is an enemy who is going about like a roaring lion looking for whom to devour. We must know how to resist him in faith.
The truth is that either you pray or you become a prey.
This is why Jesus said we should watch and pray lest we enter into temptations.
The way of escape from temptations is prayer.
When you are spiritually fortified in the place of prayer, you will be ready to overcome whatever comes your way.
To be constantly victorious, we must make prayers our priority and give God first place in everything. There can be no compromise or complacency.
As we wait upon the Lord in this season, let us ask for fresh fire and renewed zeal in our relationship with God. Let this season of prayers be a time of building a strong spiritual foundation that will enable us stand in the face of any trial or temptation. As we travail in prayers, we shall surely prevail over every schemes and plots of the enemy. Indeed any stumbling block placed in our way, will only turn into stepping stones to our greater open doors!
PRAYER: Lord, Please in this season, renew fresh fire upon my prayer altar and enable me to make You my greatest priority in life. Thank You for helping me to overcome temptations and to triumph always in Jesus Name.
