Matthew 2:11
‘And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.’

The Magi were members of a powerful priestly caste from the ancient Persian and Babylonian empires. They were scholars who studied astronomy, medicine, mathematics, sacred writings, and royal records. Known as “king–makers,” no Persian ruler was crowned without their approval. Their influence stretched across regions from Mesopotamia to Arabia.
Centuries earlier, the prophet Daniel lived among this class of wise men in Babylon and became their leader (Daniel 2:48). Many scholars believe Daniel preserved prophecies — including the timing of Messiah’s arrival — which were passed down through generations. This means the wise men who came to Bethlehem may have been following ancient calculations originally taught by Daniel.
Their journey to Christ was no small trip. It was about 1,000 miles — stretching over months, perhaps up to two years. They traveled in a large caravan with servants, animals, and supplies. When Scripture says “all Jerusalem was troubled” (Matthew 2:3), it makes sense — a royal diplomatic delegation from the East had entered their city.
Their gifts also carried powerful prophetic meaning: Gold — tribute for a King. Frankincense — burned by priests in worship. Myrrh — burial oil, hinting at Christ’s sacrificial death
The journey of the Magi teaches us that real worship requires pursuit, sacrifice, and honor.
If men of great rank could travel for months, bear gifts of great value, and bow before baby Jesus — how much more should we offer our best to our Lord? Jesus deserves our highest worship. As we celebrate Christmas, let us pause and ask ourselves: What gift are we bringing to our King?
Had Christ not come, we would have remained hopeless, lost, and condemned. But His birth has rewritten our story and changed our eternal future. Truly, He deserves our very best. Presenting our bodies to Him — our time, our decisions, our lifestyle — is a worthy offering.
Romans 12:1 says our “reasonable service” is to present our bodies as a living sacrifice — holy and pleasing to God. Worship is not just a song; it is a surrendered life.
John 4:23 tells us God is seeking worshippers in spirit and in truth. These are those whose lives are centered on pleasing Him.
Therefore, let this season inspire a fresh dedication in us. The greatest gift we can place at the feet of our Lord is a life wholly yielded to His purpose. Today let us present our hearts, choices, loyalty, obedience, and service as our gold, frankincense, and myrrh to our eternal King.
PRAYER
Father, I thank You for the amazing gift You have given to us through the birth of Christ. In appreciation of Your love, grant me the grace to live a life that constantly pleases and glorifies You, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
