The last days of the year is the period for the world’s most popular celebrations; Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. For many people, this is the time for partying, frolicking, drinking, overeating and fun seeking. Unfortunately, in the midst of these festivities, many people throw caution to the wind, resulting in calamities.
A recent CNN report said several studies show people have a greater chance of dying on Christmas day, the day after Christmas or New Year’s Day than on any other single day of the year.
A historical victim of this Christmas time calamity was Colonel Johann Rahl, who was a commander of the British troops in Trenton, New Jersey. On the night of December 25, 1776, General George Washighton who was leading the American troops, crossed the Delaware river on his way to attack Commander Rahl’s troops. A Loyalist to the British army who had seen Washington’s forces gathering quickly sent a messenger with a note to Rahl to warn him of the impending attack. But because it was Christmas day, Rahl and his men had momentarily let their guard down to celebrate. Rahl was playing cards when he was handed the warning note of the approaching enemies. But he was so occupied with the game, that he placed the note in his coat pocket and didn’t bother to read it until the game was finished. By then Washington’s troop was already upon them. Rahl and his men were easily overcome in the battle and slain.

It is good to celebrate and enjoy the fun and festivities of the season. But as believers, we should never allow ourselves to become spiritually distracted.
As we celebrate, we should remain spiritually sensitive and prayerful because this is the season when the forces of wickedness work overtime to turn people’s gladness to sadness.
Therefore, while we are on a physical holiday, we must never go on a spiritual holiday. We must remain constantly alert, sober and vigilant because there is an enemy that prowls about looking for whom to devour.[1 Peter 5:8]
Knowing that we are living in perilous days on earth, we can’t afford to live carelessly. At all times let our focus be on drawing closer to God and doing His will.
While the enemy works to increase the death rate this season, let us work with God’s help to bring most men to the saving knowledge of Christ. As we connect and communicate with friends and families at this time; let us use every opportunity to point them to Christ. The best gift God has given to mankind is sending Christ to the earth for our redemption. Let this be at the center of our celebrations. For this reason let us continually bless and thank God for His amazing love manifested through the birth of our Lord and Savior

PRAYER: Father, as I celebrate this season, please help me to stay focused on the real reason why Jesus came to the earth. Enable me to share Your love with those around me and to shine Your light for all to see in Jesus’ Name.
