On May 29, 1914, the passenger ship Empress of Ireland sank in the icy waters of the St. Lawrence River after a collision in dense fog. Within minutes, chaos broke out as passengers scrambled for safety. Life jackets were few, and time was short.
Among those on board were members of the Salvation Army traveling to an international congress. Many of them had secured life jackets and had a clear chance of survival. Yet, in a remarkable display of courage, they made a different choice.
As they saw others struggling helplessly in the freezing waters, they began to give away their life jackets. Moving from person to person, they asked a simple but eternal question: “Do you know Jesus?” Then, in an act of selfless love, they removed their own safety gear and placed it on others.
One by one, they surrendered their chance to live so that others might survive. Many of them perished that night—not because they lacked the opportunity to escape, but because they chose to lay down their lives.

The story of the Empress of Ireland reflects sacrificial love that points us to a far greater reality.
On a Good Friday, over two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ willingly laid down His life for all humanity. Unlike those passengers, He was not caught in an accident—He chose the Cross. He had the power to walk away, yet He remained, driven by love.
The Cross was not a tragedy; it was a divine rescue mission. Through His sacrifice, Jesus paid the full price for sin and secured our redemption. His death broke the power of sin, defeated the enemy, and opened the door to eternal life.
That is why it is called Good Friday—because through His suffering came our salvation, freedom, and victory. When Jesus declared, “It is finished,” He announced the completion of the greatest act of love the world has ever known.
1 John 3:16 reveals that the true definition of love is not in words, but in sacrifice. Today, we are beneficiaries of that sacrifice. Christ’s love has given us life, hope, and a new identity in Him.
Therefore as we remember His crucifixion on this good Friday, let us respond by living for Him. For in living as Christ did, we truly honor Him and glorify Him on the earth.

PRAYER
Lord, I thank You for the ultimate sacrifice You made for me on the Cross. Thank You for Your great love that gave me life, salvation, and victory. Help me to live a life that reflects Your love and brings glory to Your Name, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
