Mary Slessor was a Scottish missionary who became one of the most revered figures in missionary history. Her legacy was so impactful that she became known as the “White Queen of Calabar.”
When she arrived in Calabar, Nigeria in the late 1800s, Mary faced harsh tropical conditions, fierce tribal customs, and extreme spiritual darkness. Many areas were considered too dangerous for European missionaries. But Mary, grounded in the fear of God, was undeterred. She believed that if God had called her, He would sustain her.
One of her greatest victories in Calabar was stopping the killing of twins which was a barbaric custom prevalent among the people.
Another victory was bringing the Gospel to the Okoyong tribe, who were greatly feared for their cannibalism, violence, drugs, murder, and evil.
Other missionaries warned Mary Slessor against going to minister to the Okoyongs but she chose to live among them, She dedicated 15 years of her life to the Okoyong tribe until she saw positive transformation in the entire tribe.
In 1892, Mary Slessor was appointed vice-consul of the Okoyong territory by the British consul-general. This meant that Mary was the judge and law enforcer for the British Government in the territory.
In spite of her many administrative duties, Mary Slessor always preached Christ and led many tribal people to accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
The impact of Mary’s service to God and humanity was immeasurable. As a form of remembrance and acknowledgment of her great works, Mary was also the first woman to appear on a Scottish banknote in 1997.
The person who walks in the fear of the Lord will always succeed in their endeavors.
Mary Slessor’s choice to fear God and not fear man led her to accomplish bold and exceptional exploits on the mission field.
Psalm 111:10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” This means the divine wisdom that causes us to be distinguished in our field begins with our reverence of God.
The fear of the Lord is a basic requirement for anyone who will excel in their calling.
The truth is that we will progress in the journey of destiny to the extent to which we honor God and obey Him.
We serve the God of signs and wonders, but it is only those who fear and reverence Him that will taste of His power.
The people who achieved great things in the Bible were those who had the fear of the Lord.
Likewise, if we want to stand out in our generation and see glory in our lives, we must walk in the fear of the Lord.
We receive the fear of the Lord through hearing the Word of God. The more we hear the Word and know God, the more we will increase in our fear and reverence of Him.
To experience glory this year, let us choose to continually seek God through His Word, fervent prayers, and keep expressing praise and appreciation to Him.
As we do so, we will experience definite divine intervention in our affairs and break forth to glorious dimensions of exploits.
PRAYER:
Lord, I thank You for enabling me to always walk in the fear and reverence of Your Presence. Certainly, by Your grace, this is my season to excel in my pursuits, become distinguished in my field, and be celebrated by all, in Jesus’ Name.
